Every criminal defendant has the right to the assistance of counsel for his or her defense. In 2003, the Georgia State Legislature passed the Indigent Defense Act, creating the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council, an independent agency within the executive branch of the state government charged with providing legal representation to indigent criminal defendants.
Indigent criminal defendants in Crisp, Dooly, Wilcox and Ben Hill Counties may be represented by the Cordele Circuit Public Defender's Office by filling out an application for their services and meeting certain criteria.
